💀 The Forgotten Dead of Circleville

The Cemetery Named For a Disease Scientists Can't Actually Find Fourteen miles north of Circleville, Ohio, there's a small, unmarked field that's been called "The Cholera Cemetery" for almost two hundred years. According to the story handed down for generations, Irish immigrant laborers digging the Ohio & Erie Canal in 1832 were struck down by a cholera outbreak and buried quickly, in fear, at the edge of a prominent local family's burial plot. For the last decade, a team of archaeologists has been carefully excavating this exact site — and the science has stopped behaving. There's no mass grave. No panicked, hasty burials. No trace of cholera in any of the remains tested. What they did find is harder to shake: after two hundred years, these men's own biological traces are still present in the soil beneath them.
