Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the de facto capital of the European Union, hosting its main institutions. It's a medium-sized, bilingual city where French dominates, but you'll hear Dutch, English, and countless other languages spoken daily. The city has a laid-back, unpretentious character that blends medieval charm with modern EU glass towers.
The Grand-Place is the stunning historic heart, surrounded by ornate guildhalls, while the EU quarter feels like a completely different world just a short walk away. Brussels is famous for its waffles, chocolate, fries, and hundreds of different beers, and the locals take their food and drink seriously but without any fuss.
That said, the area immediately around the North train station has a notorious red-light district that can feel seedy and unsafe, especially at night. It's known for street prostitution and a rough atmosphere, so it's best avoided if you're not familiar with the city. Overall, Brussels isn't polished or glamorous, but it's genuine, multicultural, and full of character if you know where to look.
