In Episode 3 of The Chuck It Down Podcast, Chuck Carlton and James Bussell discuss why problem-solving and continuous improvement go hand in hand.
Chuck walks through the background behind his 11-step Chuck It Down methodology and how years of experience with DMAIC, PDCA, Shainin, and other problem-solving approaches influenced the way he developed it. We also get into some of the practical tools we use, including fishbone diagrams, 3x5 Whys, and Pareto analysis, and why getting to root cause requires more than jumping to the first explanation that sounds reasonable.
James shares some of his own background with A3 problem-solving ,and explains an analogy he often uses when facilitating teams: if you put a potential cause on a fishbone, you should be prepared to defend the evidence for it like you would in a courtroom. Otherwise, it's only an unproven theory.
We also compare our approaches, where they overlap, and some of the things James has incorporated from Chuck It Down into his own improvement and problem-solving work.
The conversation is really about creating a consistent way for people to think through problems, test assumptions, move beyond symptoms, and build stronger problem-solving capability across an organization.
