The American System: Hamilton, Carey and the Economics of Protectionism | Book Launch

Nineteenth-century America had its own school of political economy — one built around protective tariffs, internal improvements and domestic industry, and set against the free trade doctrine of the British Classical School of Adam Smith and David Ricardo. The architects of this alternative "American School" included Alexander Hamilton, Tench Coxe, Mathew Carey, Henry Clay, Friedrich List and Henry Charles Carey. Their ideas shaped Whig and Republican economic policy throughout the nineteenth century, but have been almost forgotten by the economics discipline. The book will appeal to readers of Ha-Joon Chang's Kicking Away the Ladder and Erik S. Reinert's How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor.
