Exploring the Social and Cultural Identity of the Majhi Community in Ramechhap, Nepal
This video presents insights from field discussions conducted in the Majhi settlement of Ward No. 8, Manthali Municipality, Ramechhap District, Nepal. During the visit, conversations were held with respected community elders including 90-year-old Rupamaya Majhi, 60-year-old Harkabir Majhi, 61-year-old Janake Majhi, and 63-year-old Dillibahadur Majhi.
The discussion explores the history, social organization, cultural traditions, ancestral memories, and identity of the Majhi community. According to the participants, Janake Majhi's grandfather, Panthe Majhi, was believed to have lived to the remarkable age of 160 years, reflecting the rich oral traditions and collective memory preserved within the community.
Through these firsthand narratives, the video documents indigenous knowledge, community history, cultural practices, family lineage, traditional livelihoods, and the ongoing transformation of Majhi identity in contemporary Nepal. It aims to contribute to the preservation and understanding of the unique heritage of the Majhi people.
This documentation is part of an ongoing ethnographic and sociological study on the identity, culture, and social transformation of Majhi communities in Nepal.
