Is Nagoya Castle Worth ¥1,000 Without Entering the Main Tower? Nagoya Castle Night Light-Up — Be GOLD — Be GOLD is a magical nighttime light-up event at Nagoya Castle, themed around the castle’s history and Japan’s culture of gold. Light, sound, and mist come together to create a fantastical nighttime experience. Event Period: September 19–October 4, 2026, and October 18–24, 2026 Light-Up Hours: 5:00 PM–8:00 PM (Nagoya Castle is open from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM, with gates closing at 8:00 PM.) GOLD INTERACTION (Keep/Tenshukaku and Honmaru Area): An immersive light experience featuring motion-responsive projection mapping and full-color lasers. Every 15 minutes, the climax transforms the entire area into a dazzling golden spectacle. TIME LAYER (Turrets and Stone Walls): Light illuminates the stone walls stretching from the Southwest Turret to the Southeast Turret, creating a corridor of light that expresses the layers of time accumulated since Nagoya Castle was built. Nagoya Castle is one of Japan’s most important historic castles. Construction began in 1610 under Tokugawa Ieyasu, at a time when Japanese early-modern castle architecture had reached a highly developed stage. With massive stone walls, deep moats, sophisticated defenses, huge turrets, and extensive gardens, Nagoya Castle is regarded as a pinnacle of early-modern Japanese castle architecture. It was designated a Special Historic Site of Japan in 1952. However, the main tower is currently closed to visitors. The original tower was destroyed by air raids in 1945 and reconstructed in 1959. It was later closed because of aging facilities and seismic-safety concerns. Furthermore, from October 1, 2026, the general admission fee increased from ¥500 to ¥1,000. This naturally raises the question: Is it worth paying ¥1,000 when the main tower cannot be entered? But the castle offers much more than its tower. The Honmaru Palace was built in 1615 as the residence and government office of Tokugawa Yoshinao, the first lord of the Owari domain. Although it was destroyed in 1945, it was carefully reconstructed using historical drawings, photographs, and other surviving records, and was completed in 2018. Visitors can also see surviving Edo-period turrets and gates, massive stone walls, deep moats, and the Ninomaru Garden. Nagoya Castle is therefore not simply a place to see a castle tower. It is a historical site where visitors can learn about Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Owari Tokugawa family, samurai culture, and the development of modern Nagoya. Whether ¥1,000 is worthwhile is ultimately a matter of individual perspective. The important question is what remains, what has been reconstructed, and what can actually be experienced today beyond the main tower.
