On the morning of 19 November 1967, a point man named Kenneth Jacobson climbed a ridge in the Central Highlands, eight kilometers from the Cambodian border, and smelled the enemy. Three shots later, the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, was on a hill that the Army had only just numbered: 875. This film follows the five days from 19 to 23 November 1967, when about three hundred paratroopers were pressed into a circle a hundred meters across, one American bomb fell into it at about seven o'clock in the evening, and the brigade reached the summit on Thanksgiving morning. It starts three weeks earlier in the Dak To valley and ends with the names on the Wall. It is told from the Army's official history, an Army War College study built on the after action reports, award citations, and the words of the men who were there. Where the sources disagree, for example on which aircraft dropped the bomb, the film says so. It uses real photographs and film of the same units, places and days. Where no picture of the exact place or hour survives, it shows the same units and period. No picture in it is computer-generated. Which unit were you with at Dak To, and where were you on Thanksgiving Day, 1967? If we got a name, a date or a number wrong, the comments are where it gets fixed.
