How did Dubai build the $1 billion Burj Al Arab in open water—where no land or shallow bedrock existed? The Burj Al Arab looks like a giant sail floating in the Arabian Gulf. But beneath that famous silhouette is an extraordinary engineering story involving a human-made island, deep foundation piles, hollow concrete wave barriers and enormous steel structures suspended above the sea. This engineering documentary follows the Burj Al Arab’s construction from the open water of 1994 to its opening in December 1999. Discover how crews created solid ground in the Gulf, transferred the hotel’s immense weight into sand, protected the artificial island from powerful waves and built the cantilevered restaurant and helipad high above the water. It took five years to transform an empty patch of sea into one of Dubai’s most recognizable landmarks. The finished hotel is spectacular—but its greatest engineering achievement is everything visitors never see.
