This week, the Jewish world lost Tanchum Portnoy, composer of the beloved melody “Etz Chaim Hi.” Composed in the early 1970s and first released on the 1975 album Tanchumim, this melody became part of Jewish life around the world. It is sung in countless synagogues as the Torah is returned to the Aron Kodesh—often by people who never knew the name of its composer. As we prepare for Shabbos, we share Portnoy’s timeless melody in his memory and with gratitude for the beautiful musical legacy he left behind. May his memory be a blessing. יהי זכרו ברוך. השבוע הלך לעולמו תנחום פורטנוי, מלחין הניגון האהוב והמפורסם ל״עץ חיים היא״. את הניגון הלחין בתחילת שנות השבעים, והוא הופיע לראשונה באלבום Tanchumim בשנת 1975. מאז הפך הניגון לחלק בלתי נפרד מחיי התפילה בבתי כנסת ברחבי העולם, ומושר בעת החזרת ספר התורה לארון הקודש—לעיתים בפי אנשים רבים שכלל לא ידעו את שמו של המלחין. לקראת שבת אנו משתפים את הניגון הנצחי הזה לזכרו, ובהכרת תודה על המורשת המוזיקלית היפה שהותיר אחריו. יהי זכרו ברוך.
