Do I have to be good enough for God to accept me?
Tonight’s Christian sleep story looks at one of the most exhausting questions a believer can carry: Am I praying enough, reading enough, obeying enough, or becoming a better Christian quickly enough for God to accept me?
Through Ephesians 2:1–10, Scripture gives a different foundation.
Saved by grace through faith.
Not by works.
Welcome to The Blue Hammock.
Bring your questions. Open Scripture. Rest with God.
Tonight, you arrive at a small wooden boatyard beside the Chesapeake Bay after the workday has ended.
Tools have been put away.
A low work light glows above the repair shed.
An unfinished boat rests safely on its supports.
There is still sanding to do.
Fittings still need tightening.
Boards still need careful hands.
The work is real.
But it does not have to be completed tonight.
And perhaps that unfinished boat feels familiar.
Maybe you have been looking at your Christian life like a spiritual workbench.
Did I pray enough?
Did I read enough Scripture?
Did I obey well enough?
Am I changing fast enough?
Is God disappointed because I am still unfinished?
This Christian sleep story was created for adults experiencing:
• Feeling like you are not a good enough Christian
• Wondering whether God accepts you
• Trying to earn God’s approval
• Spiritual performance anxiety
• Feeling guilty for not praying enough
• Feeling guilty for not reading the Bible enough
• Fear that you are not growing spiritually fast enough
• Constantly measuring your Christian life
• Struggling to understand grace versus works
• Feeling spiritually exhausted from trying harder
Ephesians 2 does not begin with self-improvement.
Paul begins with spiritual death.
Then comes one of the great turns of Scripture:
“But God.”
God is rich in mercy.
Because of His great love, He makes believers alive together with Christ.
And Paul explains the foundation clearly:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith.”
Salvation is God’s gift.
It is not the result of works.
Christianity is not a bargain where you improve yourself enough and God eventually agrees to save you.
You cannot pray enough to purchase salvation.
You cannot read enough Scripture to purchase it.
You cannot serve enough people to purchase it.
You cannot clean up your past enough to purchase it.
Grace cannot be converted into wages.
Jesus Christ did what sinners could never accomplish for themselves.
He lived without sin.
He went willingly to the cross.
He died for sinners.
And He rose from the dead.
The Gospel is not advice about becoming worthy enough for God.
It is good news about what God has done through Jesus Christ.
But Ephesians 2 does not make obedience meaningless.
Verse 10 says believers are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.
That order matters.
Grace first.
Salvation received through faith.
Then a life increasingly shaped by Christ.
Prayer matters.
Scripture matters.
Repentance matters.
Obedience matters.
Loving others matters.
But these things are not payment for salvation.
Good works are not the root of salvation.
They belong to the life that grows from it.
So when you see unfinished places in yourself, you do not have to pretend they are finished.
There may be sin to confess.
A habit to confront.
A person to forgive.
A wrong to make right.
A command of Christ to obey.
Real growth remains.
But spiritual growth cannot become another savior.
Jesus already occupies that place.
As the biblical teaching becomes quieter, you leave the repair shed and walk toward a covered dock overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.
Behind you, the unfinished boat remains safely supported.
The tools remain on their racks.
Tomorrow’s work is still there.
But there is a difference between unfinished and abandoned.
And there is a difference between obedience and payment.
Under the covered dock, The Blue Hammock waits between two weathered wooden posts.
The blanket is warm.
Dark bay water moves beside you.
The tools have been put away.
And there is no spiritual score left to calculate tonight.
Nothing to earn.
Nothing to prove.
Saved by grace.
Not by works.
Created for good works afterward.
The work can wait for morning.
Lower the brightness.
Set your phone down.
Bring your questions.
Open Scripture.
Rest with God.
