When a student is labeled as having manipulative behavior, it is often a sign that our intervention approach needs to change. We have all been in meetings where a child is described as demanding or controlling. It is easy to view these actions as intentional attempts to disrupt, but for many neurodivergent students, these behaviors are actually coping mechanisms. When a child agrees to a plan with one adult but tells a different story to another, they are often trying to maintain a sense of safety in an environment that feels overwhelming. Rather than engaging in power struggles, we can rethink our student interventions to focus on the anxiety driving the behavior. This shift is essential for effective PDA parenting, where the goal is to lower the demand and build trust instead of demanding compliance. By observing the intent behind the negotiation, we can better support students who are struggling to stay regulated.
