🔗 Quit paying for what forty acres already taught me — every method on this place, what each one costs, and what it will not do: There's a light over my workbench that starts going dim around eight o'clock every third week of January. Not out. Dim. Like somebody's turning a dial you can't see. I put a meter on that battery bank two winters back, fully charged, clear sun all day on the panels, and it was sitting a good deal lower than it had any business sitting. Nothing burnt, nothing cracked, not a wire loose anywhere I could find. A solar setup doesn't fail with a bang. It gets a little weaker every season, quiet as anything, and it won't say one word about it until the evening your own light won't hold. I'm Renfro. I've had panels on this roof and batteries in that shop going on twelve years, and in that time I've called exactly nobody — not the installer, not an electrician, not the man who sold it to me. I made every mistake there is to make on this system in the first three years, and I made them for free. What I'm showing you is what actually goes wrong, in the order it actually goes wrong. I know what you are fixing to ask me, so I will say it before you do. Is it the panels? Almost never. Panels sitting up there catching weather for twenty years barely lose a sliver of a percent a year. Nine times out of ten, if a setup's gone weak on a man, there's a tired battery sitting right at the middle of it, and that's exactly where I'm starting. My grandfather taught me to look for this before I ever owned a single solar panel, standing in a field with a hame strap in his hand. We had a mule named Delia who went off her feed a day and a half before anybody but him noticed. That same season the hay baler seized dead in the field with no warning at all. He told me a mule tells you. A machine does not. The only warning a machine ever gives you is the one you go out and ask it for. If your bank has already lost a third of what it used to hold, you're not maintaining it anymore, you're just delaying the bill. And there's no working around real shade across most of an array — you either move the panels or take a saw to what's growing. Once the routine's down, there's a shorter way to get the whole of it sorted instead of hunting it piece by piece — I laid the entire twelve-year system out, start to finish, with what I wish somebody had told me on day one.
