Less a conventional cover than a complete transformation. “In the Pines”, also known as “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” and “Black Girl”, is a traditional American folk song whose roots reach back to at least the nineteenth-century Southern Appalachians. The song has travelled through folk, blues, country, bluegrass and rock in countless different forms. Lead Belly’s recordings from the 1940s became one of its central points of reference. Many later listeners discovered the song through Nirvana’s intense performance of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” for MTV Unplugged in 1993 – but the song’s history reaches much further back. Delaney Davidson has carried “In the Pines” through his own repertoire for many years. A compact recording appeared on his album “Self Decapitation” in 2010, followed by a much longer live version on “Devil in the Parlour” in 2016. At Elba Sonica in 2019, the song had become a vehicle for his unmistakable form of live performance: unstable, physical, theatrical and completely his own. Elba Sonica is an international independent music festival at Morcone Beach on the Italian island of Elba. Brought to life by Albergo La Scogliera and Bebop Schallplatten Rosenheim, the festival turns the beach into a stage and meeting place for artists and audiences from different countries – somewhere between concert, holiday and temporary community.
