The water crisis at Jurala Project has intensified as farmers demand the release of irrigation water for their crops. With insufficient rainfall and low inflows into projects, farmers in the Jurala ayacut say their crops are drying up after they invested money in cultivation. After two days of protests, farmers reportedly broke the locks of the dam entry gate on Saturday evening and released water into the left canal without official permission. Officials subsequently stopped the irrigation water release and deployed special police teams near the left canal head regulator amid concerns over further protests. Farmers are questioning why irrigation water was released earlier despite the El Niño situation and are demanding water until their crops are harvested. Meanwhile, Minister Vakiti Srihari said the available water at Jurala must be preserved to meet drinking water requirements until next June.
