Fire Walking, also known as Theemithi (தீமிதி) in Tamil, is one of the most important and spectacular religious traditions practised by the Hindu community in Singapore.
It is a sacred ceremony that demonstrates faith, devotion, courage and the power of prayer. Every year, hundreds of Hindu devotees gather to participate in or witness this religious event, with many coming to fulfil vows made to their deities.
1. What is the meaning of Fire Walking?
Theemithi is traditionally associated with the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, particularly the story of Draupadi.
According to the story, Draupadi, the wife of the five Pandava brothers, walked across a bed of burning embers to prove her purity and innocence after the great Kurukshetra war.
Her successful walk across the fire became a symbol of truth, purity, courage and divine protection.
Over time, this story became an important part of Hindu religious worship, especially among devotees who worship Draupadi Amman.
2. Why do devotees walk across burning fire?
For many devotees, fire walking is not simply a physical challenge or a test of bravery.
It represents:
Faith: Showing strong belief in the divine.
Devotion: Expressing love and respect towards the deity.
Fulfilment of vows: Keeping promises made during prayers.
Thanksgiving: Giving thanks for blessings, protection and answered prayers.
Spiritual strength: Demonstrating determination and commitment to religious beliefs.
Some devotees undertake the ritual after praying for good health, family safety, success or help during difficult times.
3. How does the Fire Walking ceremony take place?
The ceremony involves several stages:
1. Religious preparations: Devotees observe prayers, fasting and other spiritual practices.
2. Preparation of the fire pit: A long bed of burning charcoal and embers is prepared.
3. Prayers and blessings: Devotees participate in religious rituals before their turn.
4. The fire walk: Participants walk barefoot across the glowing embers as part of their religious vows.
5. Completion of the ritual: After crossing the fire, devotees continue with prayers and offerings.
The ceremony is conducted under religious supervision and is a deeply meaningful experience for participants.
4. Fire Walking in Singapore – A Long-standing Tradition
In Singapore, the most famous Fire Walking Festival takes place at Sri Mariamman Temple at South Bridge Road, in Chinatown.
The temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1827. Theemithi has been an important annual religious event here since the early days of the temple. Historical records also trace the festival in Singapore to around 1835.
The tradition was brought to Singapore by South Indian immigrants, particularly Tamil workers and the boat-building community.
The festival involves approximately three months of religious activities, including prayers, processions and ceremonies, before reaching its highlight: the fire-walking ceremony.
One special part of the celebration is the procession from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple along Serangoon Road to Sri Mariamman Temple, covering approximately four kilometres.
The 2026 Fire Walking Festival
1 November 2026
The 2026 Theemithi ceremony took place on Sunday, 1 November 2026, at Sri Mariamman Temple. Devotees and visitors gathered to witness this important religious occasion.
Traditionally, men undertake the actual fire-pit crossing in Singapore, while women can participate through other religious practices, including prayers, offerings and acts of devotion.
5. Why is this festival important to Singapore?
Fire Walking is more than an exciting religious spectacle. It represents Singapore's multicultural heritage and the continuation of traditions passed down through generations.
For the Hindu community, it is a time of faith, family, prayer and thanksgiving. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to understand the beliefs and cultural practices of the Indian community.
