Lesson Ideas:
1. Look at this picture! What is different about this camel? How many humps? (count together) Is this camel real or pretend?
2. Listen to the song and copy my (teacher's) movements. Clap hands on the beats of silence and show numbers on fingers. On the first "go", put right fist on hip. On second "go" put left fist on hip. On "boom boom boom" shake hips right, left, right.
3. Sing song while teacher demonstrates giving a "high ten" on the beats of silence to various students. Sing as many verses as desired until students have an understanding.
4. Students in scattered formation find a new partner after each "boom boom boom" to give a "high ten" to on the beats of silence. It's OKAY if students don't find a partner. If no partner is found, clap own hands. Partners should be chosen with eye contact rather than shouting the name of desired partner.
5. Sit back down in seats. Sing through the first several verses once more. Instead of clapping hands, choose a SILENT movement to do on the beats of silence and discuss "beat of silence" and/or the musical term "rest".
I have found this to be a great introduction to "beats of silence" for K-1 students. I hope you find this lesson helpful!
