Acts does not begin with the ambition of the apostles, the strategy of the church, or the energy of a new religious movement. It begins with the risen Lord Jesus. Luke opens his second treatise by looking back to what Jesus began to do and teach, and then shows that the ascended Christ continues His work by His Spirit through His witnesses. This learning activity focuses on Acts 1:1-5, the foundation stone for the whole book. Here we meet Jesus alive after His passion, presenting Himself by many infallible proofs, speaking of the kingdom of God, and commanding the apostles whom He had chosen. Before there is public witness, there is revelation, instruction, command, and waiting. Before the apostles go, they must receive the promise of the Father. Before the church speaks to the nations, the church must depend on Yahweh’s gift of the Holy Ghost. This passage forms us to read Acts rightly: not as a story of human religious achievement, but as the continuing work of Yeshua HaMashiach, risen, reigning, commanding, and empowering His people.
