Why Medieval Castles Were Built in Such Strange Places

Why were medieval castles built on steep cliffs, beside narrow shorelines, or tucked deep inside valleys? Their locations were rarely random. In this episode of Castle Curiosity, we explore how the landscape shaped defence, access, supplies and power. Using examples including Eltz, Chillon, Harlech and Peveril, we look beyond the walls to the roads, water routes and settlements that helped castles function.
