Brunswick is a suburb of Melbourne located 5km (3.1mi) north of the CBD. It is known for many things, from its multicultural restaurants to its vibrant music and arts scene. However, a lesser known feature is the sheer amount of level crossings in the area. The Upfield line (Northern Group) spears right through the middle of the suburb, stopping at Jewell, Brunswick and Anstey stations. This creates a total of 8 road crossings and 3 pedestrian crossings, for a whopping total of 11 level crossings within a distance of only 2.5km (1.6mi). All of these crossings are set to be removed by the Level Crossing Removal Project by 2030. The tracks will be elevated onto a SkyRail bridge similar to what's already been done further down the line between Moreland and Coburg stations. This video aims to showcase the many level crossings in Brunswick and to preserve a record of them before they are inevitably grade separated.
