Atwood Magazine asked me to record an acoustic set for their curated Instagram series, which was an honor. For those not on Instagram, I thought I'd put the set and their description here. Watch New Jersey-based singer/songwriter (and recent American Idol contestant) Jake Thistle (@jakethistlemusic) performing three songs off his upcoming sophomore album, ‘A Stranger By Design’ (out Sept 25)! “Today, Jake Thistle stands at a rare intersection: Young enough to still be discovering new edges of his sound, yet seasoned enough to know exactly what he values… Thistle isn’t chasing trends; he’s building a body of work that can stand in conversation with the songwriters who first captivated him.” - @MitchMosk, @AtwoodMagazine — — :: ABOUT THE MUSIC :: Hiding In the Vacancy This song was specifically written to open the upcoming record, and sonically bridge my last project into this new one. It’s mostly about trying to stall the old memories that creep in during sleepless nights, and how there’s often not much you can do to keep them out. I recorded it in LA with Stacy Jones and Billy Lefler. The track features Stacy on drums, Whynot Jansfeld on bass, Jamie Arentzen on guitar, and Sara Lindsay on backing vocals. Sleep On Me Sleep On Me is about asking for a second chance. I recorded it at Q Division studios in Boston with Tom Odell’s fantastic rhythm section: Toby Couling on drums, Max Clilverd on guitar, and Max Goff on bass. It’s one of the only tracks on the album recorded live with the band in the same room at the same time. The City Whispers This was the first song cut for this new project. I recorded it over two days with the amazing Butch Walker at his breathtaking studio outside of Nashville. Butch is a Mount Rushmore producer for me, so I’m honored to have him on the project. I learned a ton from watching him work up close on the songs we cut. The City Whispers is primarily about using external factors as an excuse to avoid self-reflection and personal growth.
