Au Lapin Agile is Paris's oldest active bar-cabaret, located in the historic Montmartre neighborhood. 1860: Opened as a tavern called Au rendez-vous des voleurs (Thieves' Meeting Point). 1869: Renamed the Cabaret des Assassins after its wall decor. 1875–1879: Artist André Gill painted a sign of a rabbit escaping a cooking pot ("Le Lapin à Gill"), which evolved into Au Lapin Agile (the agile rabbit). Early 1900s: Saved from demolition by cabaret singer Aristide Bruant. It became a famous haven for impoverished bohemians like Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, and Guillaume Apollinaire, who often paid for drinks with artwork. Picasso's painting At the Lapin Agile made the venue globally famous. Today Au Lapin Agile operates as an evening performance space preserving Montmartre's artistic legacy and remains a low-key, rustic, and intimate venue largely unchanged by time. Instead of modern tourist shows with feathers or topless dancers, it features traditional French chanson à texte (lyric-driven songs), poetry recitals, and folk tunes where the audience sings along
