The late backhand is one of the most advanced and crucial defensive shots in badminton. When the shuttle is past you and dropping low, most players give up the point. But with the right technique, you can turn this losing position into a winning advantage.
In this video, I break down the exact mechanics of the late backhand, showing you how to execute it confidently and use it to stay in the rally.
We start with the footwork. You will learn why turning your back fully to the net is so important, and why you must lunge to the side of the shuttle rather than directly under it to leave room for your arm swing. From there, we move to the grip switch. I explain the two grips that work from this position: the bevel grip for a straight drop and the panhandle grip for a cross‑court drop, and I show you why a standard backhand grip will cause your shot to fail.
Next comes the hitting action. Since you have no room for a big backswing, power comes from a short, whip‑like motion driven by your elbow and finished with a firm finger squeeze. I also clarify why your wrist should stay neutral to avoid injury and wasted energy. Then we cover shot selection and anticipation. You will learn that a straight drop is your safest option, while the cross‑court drop is a higher‑risk reward that should only be used when your opponent has over‑committed. I also emphasize that your recovery is just as important as the shot itself, because a smart opponent will immediately move forward to attack your drop.
Finally, I give you a simple but effective live drill that links everything together. You start at the net, play a straight net shot, your partner lifts cross‑court to your backhand, you hit a cross‑court late backhand drop, and then you recover forward to play the next net shot. This cycle trains your grip switch, your movement, and your recovery under pressure.
