Johann Franz Xaver Sterkel: Easy Piano Concerto No. 4 in C Major, StWV 151 or Op. 26 No. 3 (1786)
2nd mvt: 17:32 3rd mvt: 27:44
Pianist: Nataša Veljković
Orchestra: Sudwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim
Conductor: Johannes Moesus
This is the fourth concerto released by Sterkel, dated to 1786, shortly after Mozart himself single-handedly overhauled the piano concerto genre with his vast output during the years 1782 through 1784.
It was one of three released as part of Op. 26, but not all of Sterkel's concertos have been recorded. This recording was made by the same musicians who provided us with Woelfl 2 and 3, which I also have on the channel. I did write down the cadenzas and the orchestral parts by ear, since the score used figured bass and the cadenzas of course were unwritten.
This concerto is more difficult than Op. 20, but about on par with its Op. 26 sibling and still easier than typical for Mozart. It has relatively simple passagework with much Scarlatti-like repetition.
Sterkel's three other concertos have never been recorded, and I have no plans to arrange them myself until they do have available recordings — not just for quality purposes, but also since I do need recordings to write down the orchestral reductions and cadenzas. Those who are curious about them are encouraged to visit @Darrel_Hoffman 's channel, where he made synthesized reconstructions so as to give people a good idea of what they sound like.
