Oasis - Live in Wantagh, Jones Beach Theatre, 8/9/1996

Yes, you read that correctly, Wantagh. Wantagh is out of the "New York City" area and while Long Island is technically correct, it is the whole island. Wantagh is the city in Long Island where Jones Beach is located, therefore, the gig is in Wantagh. That's also what it says on the official promo posters on the official Oasis website. The second night of Jones Beach is a fantastic gig and it really makes me upset that this gig is so good because this tour shouldn't have happened at all. Where do I even start with this tour? Liam slags the band off to buy a house, making Noel perform in Chicago at the Rosemont Horizon, a nearly sold-out crowd if I might add. Liam pokes fun at the co-headliner, The Screaming Trees' name, and pisses off Mark Lanegan to where they almost fight. Rumor has it Liam showed up drunk to the next gig at Auburn Hills. They get their shit together and perform their best at Molson Park opening for Neil Young. Then we get to Philadelphia, and we all know about the Corestates gig, which was the first concert to be held there mind you. Then Liam pisses off MTV with whatever you call that performance of Champagne Supernova. The Worcester gig isn't that bad, but then all of a sudden, the Jones Beach gigs sound amazing. His voice is a combo of Knebworth + pre Be Here Now and it sounds so good. Unfortunately, no audio has ever shown up about the gig in Bristow, Virginia, which was the last gig before Noel decided to pack up and leave, and I don't blame him at all. They should've hit the ground hard recording the album after MTV Unplugged and then finished the US tour in early '97, at least in my opinion. Liam managed to tarnish Oasis' small reputation in America in just 2 weeks. Amazing how you go from playing in front of 250,000 people to being on the edge of breaking up, oh well. About the gig itself. As I said, it sounds fantastic. Some Might Say, Morning Glory and It's Gettin' Better (Man!!) are some highlights and Noel's acoustic parts are always top-notch. The only downside is I Am The Walrus' end is cut. Either taper's battery died or he just stopped recording. There's no artificial fade-out either, it just ends. The photographer is Gery Malerba.
