The journey to the top of Fanjingshan, especially the Red Cloud Golden Summit, is not for the faint-hearted. It begins after we get off the cable car at Fanjingshan. From there, we climb about 1,200 steps up to the Mushroom Rock viewpoint. After that, we head back down toward the base of a towering rocky peak, where a dramatic vertical split cuts through the mountain. This is Yi Xian Tian (一线天), or “A Sliver of Sky,” so narrow that you can almost touch both rock walls at the same time. From there, the real climb begins. We pull ourselves up some near-vertical section using metal chains fixed into the stone, moving in single file up steep inclines that can reach around 70 to 80 degrees. At the top, the reward is unforgettable. A small stone bridge connects two ancient temples, the Temple of Sakyamuni and the Temple of Maitreya, sitting high above the clouds at around 2,330 meters. On the right, you'll see the Mushroom Rock. The altitude here is 2318 meters. This is the "Radiant Light" viewing platform. There's a viewing platform here, number 23. If you choose to go to the Old Golden Summit, then it's points 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. This takes you to the highest point, 2494 meters. Then you return to points 12 and 13, completing the Golden Summit traverse. We suggest skipping the Old Golden Summit and going to the Golden Summit instead. So we'll go to point 14. Therefore, at the Mushroom Rock, don't turn right. What should you do? Turn left, turn left, this path leads down the stairs. Go to the left, and you'll come down to numbers 14 and 15.
