You put on a mask this morning without noticing. Carl Jung called it the persona - the curated, socially-adapted face you show the world. And the usual advice is to rip it off and be your authentic self. This video argues that advice is half right and half genuinely dangerous.
This is a long-form video essay on the persona - the mask - and its complicated relationship with who you actually are. Why you need the mask (a person with no filter isn't free, they're unbearable). How it forms in childhood as a survival strategy. And the two ways it goes wrong: over-identification, where the role eats the person and a successful life starts to feel hollow - and the gap, where everything the mask won't show piles up into the shadow, so the most polished personas hide the densest darkness.
Then the modern trap: the personal brand, and the strange exhaustion of being told to perform your authenticity. And the turn most people miss - the goal was never to remove the mask and find the "real you" underneath, because when you look for a single true self, you find a crowd. You don't discover a self. You build one.
And the honest part: why "just be real" is bad advice, why the true self may be a myth, and what the actual aim is - not authenticity, but wholeness. A self big enough to hold all its masks, and at least one place where they come off.
The danger was never the mask. It was forgetting there was a face.
See what people hide - even from themselves.
