Welcome to Episode 1 of Hammond Essentials! In this first episode, we're exploring Booker T. Jones's playing on Melting Pot by Booker T. & the M.G.'s, looking at how he combines the Hammond's expressive elements to create powerful, musical transitions. We'll explore three essential aspects of his playing: Percussive playing – how Booker T. uses both hands to create rhythmic impact, and how to achieve a similar effect on a modern digital organ. Leslie control – using the transition Slow/Fast to create movement, excitement and dynamic lift. Drawbar control – why knowing your first four drawbars instinctively is fundamental to shaping your sound in real time. More importantly, we'll look at how these elements work together, and how you can bring them into your own playing. I'm Joe Glossop, a London-based professional Hammond and piano player who's spent the last 20 years touring and recording with artists including Tom Jones, Van Morrison and Paolo Nutini. Whether you're playing a vintage Hammond or a modern clonewheel, the aim is the same: to develop a more instinctive, expressive and musical approach to the instrument. New episodes every Monday.
