Rebellions During the Caliphate of Ali (RA) During the caliphate of Hazrat Ali (RA) (35–40 AH / 656–661 CE), several major rebellions and civil wars occurred. These were the result of complex political and social circumstances of the time. The major events are outlined below: 1) Battle of the Camel (Jamal) – 36 AH Location: Basra Parties Involved: Hazrat Ali (RA) Hazrat Aisha (RA), Hazrat Talha (RA), Hazrat Zubair (RA) Background: After the martyrdom of Caliph Uthman (RA), differences arose over the demand for immediate retribution against his killers. The dispute eventually led to armed conflict. Outcome: Hazrat Ali (RA) emerged victorious. Hazrat Talha (RA) and Hazrat Zubair (RA) were martyred, and Hazrat Aisha (RA) was sent back to Madinah with full honor and respect. 2) Battle of Siffin – 37 AH Location: Siffin (near the Euphrates River) Parties Involved: Hazrat Ali (RA) Amir Muawiya (RA), Governor of Syria Background: The disagreement centered on the issue of retribution for the killers of Hazrat Uthman (RA). Key Event: Copies of the Qur’an were raised on spears, leading to the acceptance of arbitration (Tahkeem) and the suspension of fighting. Outcome: The conflict remained unresolved, and political divisions deepened. 3) Rebellion of the Kharijites Background: A group broke away from Hazrat Ali (RA) after he accepted arbitration, raising the slogan: “Judgment belongs only to Allah.” Actions: The Kharijites resorted to violence against ordinary Muslims and state officials. 4) Battle of Nahrawan – 38 AH Location: Nahrawan Parties Involved: Hazrat Ali (RA) The Kharijites Outcome: The Kharijites were decisively defeated, though their movement was not completely eliminated. 5) Internal Unrest and Provincial Challenges Disobedience by some provincial governors Political instability in Kufa, Basra, and other regions Administrative weakness due to continuous warfare Summary The caliphate of Hazrat Ali (RA) was founded upon justice, truth, and principles, but persistent rebellions and civil wars placed the state under severe strain. These circumstances eventually paved the way for the events that led to his martyrdom in 40 AH.
