The Iron Will: The Life and Legacy of Fikret Hodžić Before he became a 15-time champion, Fikret Hodžić was just a young man in Čavlani, near Prijedor, with an extraordinary dream. Without access to a gym, proper weights, or professional trainers, he relied on pure grit. He cast his own dumbbells out of concrete, lifted heavy wagon wheels attached to metal bars, and built his own bench. Through sheer discipline, Fikret transformed himself into a force of nature. In 1974, he founded Partizan, the first bodybuilding club in Bosnia. Two years later, he captured his first Yugoslavian national bodybuilding title—a title he would refuse to relinquish for 15 consecutive years. His dedication brought him to the world stage in Cairo, where he earned the deep respect and lifelong friendship of Arnold Schwarzenegger. To those who knew him, Fikret was more than an elite athlete; he was a gentle giant who spent his life lifting others up, mentoring young men, and sharing his passion for fitness. The Tragedy In July 1992, the dark shadows of war descended upon Prijedor. On July 9th, tragic fate struck when armed men arrived at Fikret’s doorstep. Among them were young men he had personally trained and considered friends. Fikret was brutally murdered in front of his home, mere steps away from the gym where he had helped build the very strength of the men who took his life. His remains were only recovered years later, in 2009, from a mass grave. Though his life was cut short, his unbreakable spirit could never be extinguished. Fikret Hodžić’s life was defined by dedication, resilience, and humanity.
