🌊 Inside the Deadliest Ocean in Earth’s History Long before today’s whales, sharks, and dolphins ruled the seas, Earth’s oceans were home to a world of enormous marine reptiles, giant predatory fish, powerful sharks, and creatures unlike anything alive today. For nearly 185 million years, the Mesozoic oceans were shaped by warm temperatures, high sea levels, abundant marine life, and an extraordinary concentration of predators. Ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pliosaurs, mosasaurs, giant sea turtles, ammonites, and enormous predatory fish occupied an ecosystem where even the largest animals were never completely safe. In this documentary, we travel through the evolution of the Mesozoic ocean, from the first ichthyosaurs and the enormous Shonisaurus, to long-necked elasmosaurids, powerful pliosaurs, Pliosaurus funkei, Tylosaurus, Xiphactinus, Archelon, and the sharks that survived when nearly everything else disappeared. We also explore the Western Interior Seaway, an ancient inland ocean that once covered much of North America. Its fossil record preserves evidence of massive predators competing, hunting, scavenging, and sometimes attacking one another. Beneath them, anoxic dead zones and unstable ocean chemistry created another layer of danger. Then came the event that ended it all. Around 66 million years ago, the Chicxulub asteroid struck Earth, disrupting the atmosphere, collapsing photosynthesis, destroying the foundations of marine food webs, and bringing the long reign of Mesozoic marine giants to an end. But the story does not end with extinction. The sharks survived. Sea turtles survived. Bony fish survived. And over millions of years, a different ocean emerged, eventually giving rise to whales, dolphins, and the marine ecosystems we know today. 🌌 Deep Sea Sleep Stories explores the ancient oceans, extinct creatures, deep-time mysteries, and scientific discoveries that reveal how strange Earth once was.
