Pt. Yashwantbuwa Joshi sings Raag Bhatiyar.
Pt. Yashwantbuwa Joshi was a vocalist of the Gwalior and Agra Gharanas. He started out his music training with his uncle Govardhanbuwa Naik, an early graduate of Pt. V.D. Paluskar’s Gandharva Mahavidyalay in Lahore. At a young age, he began learning from Pt. Yashwant Sadashiv Mirashi (“Mirashibuwa”). After moving to Mumbai, he began learning from Pt. Jagannathbuwa Purohit “Gunidas” of the Agra gharana, but also benefitted from his association with other great luminaries of the broader Atrauli gharana, such as Pt. K.G. Ginde, Pt. S.C.R. Bhat, Pt. Nivruttibuwa Sarnaik, Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur, and Pt. Gajananbuwa Joshi. He was also influenced by the great natyageet vocalists Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar and Pt. Saudagar Nagnath Gore (“Chhota Gandharva”). Of the lot, Pt. Gajananbuwa Joshi and Chhota Gandharva had the greatest effect on his singing.
He was, unfortunately, never recorded in his prime, but the recordings available are, in every way, compelling and colorful. He demonstrated mastery of khayal and natyageet alike; and a sort of “eagerness” in each performance, which are absolutely on display here.
There is no intent to monetize off of these recordings. They are uploaded for the purpose of public archival.
