Winter Is Coming: What Nobody Tells You About Driving an EV in the Cold

Winter is coming, and if you drive an EV in Canada, you’ve probably heard all the warnings about cold weather, range loss and keeping the battery warm. But what actually happens when the temperature drops? In this video, I’m sharing my real-world experience with my Chevrolet Equinox EV through winter, including what I’ve learned about heat pumps, resistive heaters, battery preconditioning, winter range loss and EV battery management. I’ll explain how a heat pump compares with a resistive heater, why short trips can use more energy in winter, what battery preconditioning actually does, and what you can expect from an EV when the temperature really drops. After living with my Equinox EV, I’ve come to a few conclusions that might surprise some people: My Equinox EV is the best winter vehicle I’ve ever owned. Winter driving isn't perfect for an EV — and it isn't perfect for a gas car either. But understanding what your EV is doing in the cold makes a huge difference.
