Hampi was once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, a city so rich that travellers wrote about gems being sold openly in its streets. Then, in 1565, it was defeated, plundered and left in ruins. This is the story of Hampi in Hindi: how it began, its golden age under Krishnadevaraya, the royal buildings, the bazaar, the stone chariot and musical pillars of Vittala Temple, the Battle of Talikota, and how the ruins were rediscovered. Please note: the traveller descriptions (Domingo Paes, Abdur Razzaq), the legend of Vidyaranya, the age of the Virupaksha Temple's worship and the exact length of the plunder come from old accounts and traditions, so we tell them as accounts and not proven facts.
