There's far more to Great Work Mine in Cornwall than its impressive old engine house.
In this exploration, we get a closer look at the mine's deep shaft, the remains of its pumping engine and the fascinating engineering that once kept the mine working. We also discover a unique feature in the metal grate above the shaft and explore the remains of the engine house, including the original boiler area and condenser pit.
But the surprises don't end there. Wandering around the surrounding countryside reveals old mine workings, deep excavations and potential abandoned shafts — reminders of Cornwall's rich mining heritage and the dangers that can remain hidden beneath the undergrowth.
Great Work Mine worked for tin, lead and copper for around 200 years before closing in 1939. Its unusual chimney, with two stages of brickwork at the top, makes it a particularly interesting site to visit.
