Why are windows in many modern yurts still made of flexible vinyl? If a yurt is simply a tent, a flexible vinyl window makes sense. But today, yurts are increasingly presented and used as living spaces and homes. So what should we expect from a window in a home? Many yurt owners want real glass windows. Some buy the windows themselves, build separate wooden frames, modify the lattice wall, cut the exterior fabric, and install the windows on their own. Their work is impressive. But it raises a more fundamental question: Why does something completely ordinary in a house become a special upgrade in a yurt? More than twenty years ago in Korea, we confronted the same problem. We realized that simply replacing a vinyl window with a glass window was not enough. To use a residential window properly, the wall itself had to change. The window frame, multilayer insulation, curved wall, and window jamb had to work together as one building system. The real difference is not the window itself. It is how the wall is designed to receive the window. And this leads to an even bigger question: Can you turn a yurt into a home by changing one component at a time — or does the entire system have to change?
