I never really appreciated it at the time (Green Day's slow song just didn't do it for angsty teenage James... I was more into their punk rock stuff). Aaaanyways.. The lesson begins with the four easy chords needed to play the tune. We practice the shapes and we practice switching between them and then we learn the strumming pattern. We can use the most common strumming pattern ever and pair that up with those four simple chord shapes and play this song in a very easy way! It just consists of three sections: a verse, pre chorus and chorus - and all of them are incredibly simple. After learning the easy acoustic version of this tune, we can try some intermediate upgrades. First we'll learn to arpeggiate the chord pattern. That means to add some picking to the strumming pattern. We work through it bit by bit and add it to our chord progression. Then we learn the other strumming pattern that he uses throughout the tune. This one is two measures long and it changes throughout the song but this is a good guideline for how Billy Joe Armstrong would strum this tune. We also add the D chord instead of Dsus4 - a very simple upgrade needed to play it like the original recording. If you'd like to practice the entire song with me, there's a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish.
