Every few years, Formula One takes the most powerful, most advanced engine on earth and makes it illegal. Not because it failed, but usually because it worked too well, cost too much, or sounded too good to survive the next set of rules.
One of these engines couldn't manage two miles on a gallon of fuel. One was a jet engine bolted into a Formula One car, and it actually raced. And one helped make Formula One engines more efficient than almost anything on the road, and has just

The supercharged Alfetta and the BRM V16. The 2.5-liter engine and the British teams' rebellion. The Lotus 56B gas turbine. The turbo era and its qualifying engines. The V12 that Ferrari refused to give up. The screaming V10s. The frozen V8s. And the MGU-H, removed for 2026.
