Beatrice Claywell has twenty-six years, a father's library she has read twice over, a lending library she runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays for no wages, and a catalogue written in Latin because Mr. Petworth's shelving deserved better than English. The place is Mossfield — a market town two miles south of Aldenvale estate in the English midlands, where the same families have known each other's business since before anyone thought to write it down, and where the arrival of a duke in October is the kind of event that gets discussed until the following October at the earliest.
What Beatrice does not anticipate, on a Thursday afternoon in 1814, is a gentleman in an excellent coat standing in the middle of her library blocking the Natural Philosophy section and claiming to be grazing. She tells him the catalogue is in Latin. He finds the broken chair. He leaves without the book he came for and without his name, and she lets him, because he has not given her reason to ask.
By morning she knows who he is. By Tuesday she goes to the library anyway.
He is already in the window seat.
What follows is not a courtship — or not one either of them would call that, not to the other's face. It is philosophy argued across a foot of upholstered space, a dinner at the estate that ends at a south-facing window, a letter from London about a suitable match, and a woman named Sophronia Vane who arrives in November, understands the situation in forty minutes, and does the most generous thing anyone does in the whole story. It is a duke who has not trusted his own judgement in three years and a vicar's daughter who knows the difference between a man who is cold and a man who is afraid. It is a position in Bath, a farewell that is not quite a farewell, and a window seat that holds two people exactly as well as it holds one.
And underneath all of it, the question that goes unanswered from October to December: whether a man who has decided that feeling is either weakness or theatre can be made to change his mind by a woman who has never once looked up when he walked through the door.
