Who is Butters Stotch, really? This video explains the origin, voice, personality, and family life of Leopold "Butters" Stotch, the South Park character voiced by Matt Stone.
Butters began as an unnamed background child in the 1997 South Park premiere on Comedy Central, and it took nearly two years for him to get his name. The video follows how he went from a placeholder figure to one of the show's most developed characters, based on co-producer Eric Stough. It covers his time filling Kenny McCormick's seat, the creation of Professor Chaos, and the darker side of the Stotch household. The narration is calm and slow, made for relaxed listening.
What's covered in this video:
Butters first appears without a name in "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe," and the crew called him "Puff Puff" and "Swanson" in scripts and storyboards.
Stan calls him Swanson during a dodgeball game in "Conjoined Fetus Lady," and his early lines include "me too" in "Roger Ebert Should Lay Off the Fatty Foods" and passing a note for Bebe Stevens in "Clubhouses."
He gets his name in "Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub," set at Mr. Mackey's meteor shower party with Pip and Dougie, which aired weeks after South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.
Matt Stone voices him with a stutter and a Southern tinge, digitally pitched up, and the nickname comes from Eric Stough, whom Trey Parker and Matt Stone called their little buddy.
After "Kenny Dies" in December 2001, "Butters' Very Own Episode" aired one week later, and Butters then joined Stan, Kyle, and Cartman as the fourth boy at the start of season six.
In "Professor Chaos," the boys fire Butters and hold auditions that pick Tweek Tweak, and Butters becomes Professor Chaos with Dougie as General Disarray.
Kenny returns in the final seconds of "Red Sleigh Down" after being absent for seventeen episodes.
Stough's 2014 University of Colorado commencement address describes the sheltered upbringing that shaped Butters as naive, optimistic, and gullible.
Butters uses minced oaths like "oh hamburgers," hums a wordless "loo loo loo" tune, fears being grounded, and wears a Professor Chaos costume that parodies Marvel's Doctor Doom.
Stephen Stotch's repeated "you are grounded" line leads into "Butters' Very Own Episode," a 1950s sitcom parody in which Butters follows his father to the White Swallow spa.
Linda Stotch tries to drown Butters in a lake, and his parents then make up a carjacking story, which shows the household protecting its appearance at his expense.
