Xujiahui, once one of the four major urban sub-centers within the central city of Shanghai, is now one of Shanghai's Central Activity Districts, as well as one of Shanghai's ten major commercial centers, covering an area of 4.04 square kilometers from Wanping Road in the east to Yishan Road in the west, Guangyuan Road in the north, and Zeroing Road in the south.
The 2016-2035 Shanghai Master Plan specifies that Shanghai's central activity district includes Little Lujiazui, the Bund, People's Square, Nanjing Road, Huaihai Zhong Road, Xizang Zhong Road, Sichuan North Road, Yuyuan Mall, the Expo-Front Beach-Xuhui Riverfront area, Xujiahui, Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road area, Zhongshan Park, Suhe Bay, the North Bund, Yangpu Riverfront (within the Inner Ring), and Zhang Yang Road. The Xujiahui commercial center was planned in 1988, and the whole project was divided into three phases. The first phase was launched in 1992 and completed by the end of the 20th century.
Xujiahui is also one of the areas where Shanghai citizens buy computers and digital products. At the same time, the area is also home to many businesses dealing with luxury goods, mid to high-end clothing, and various entertainment and restaurant industries.
In 2013, Hong Kong's Sun Hung Kai Properties spent $21.77 billion to win the Xujiahui Center site, which was crowned the number one landowner in Shanghai by being the "last prime site in central Shanghai" and the "tallest building in Puxi". The site is being used for the construction of the Shanghai International Trade Center (ITC), consisting of a 379-meter main building and a 220-meter secondary building.
