Samulnori – The Rhythm of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity
Lee Kwang-soo's Samulnori | The Spirit of Korean Percussion
In Lee Kwang-soo's interpretation of Samulnori, five sounds come together in harmony: the metallic sound of heaven, the drumbeat of earth, the resonant gong of humanity, and the two distinct sounds of the janggu representing space and time.
Together, these sounds awaken Sinmyeong—a uniquely Korean spirit of joy, energy, and collective exhilaration.
Samulnori, meaning "the play of four instruments," was established as a stage performance in 1978 by four pioneering artists: Lee Kwang-soo, Kim Duk-soo, Choi Jong-sil, and Kim Yong-bae.
More than a percussion performance, Samulnori brings together rhythm, movement, dance, and breath in perfect harmony.
Through the dynamic interplay of four traditional instruments—the kkwaenggwari (small gong), jing (large gong), janggu (hourglass-shaped drum), and buk (barrel drum)—the musicians exchange rhythms that grow increasingly powerful and exhilarating.
As the performance reaches its climax, performers and audience become united in a shared celebration of rhythm and joy.
Experience the vibrant energy, communal spirit, and timeless beauty of Korean traditional percussion.
