HOP-FRIEND by Terry Carr

This story first appeared in the November 1962 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, followed the next year with a spot in The Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction: Twelfth Series. One more magazine appearance (a French one) came with Fiction #149, in April 1966. It popped up in multiple anthologies through the turn of the century, and in 1976, was included in a collection of the author's stories entitled The Light at the End of the Universe.
