Welcome to Physics With William — your calm place to unwind, relax, and gently drift into sleep while exploring one of the strangest objects allowed by general relativity. Tonight, we softly explore the kugelblitz — a hypothetical black hole created not from collapsing matter, but from an enormous concentration of energy, such as light. Einstein’s relativity tells us that energy curves spacetime just like mass does. So in principle, if enough radiation were compressed into a small enough region, its own gravity could become strong enough to trap that radiation behind an event horizon. That means a black hole does not necessarily need to begin as a star. It could, at least in theory, form from pure energy packed tightly enough together. The challenge is that the required energy density would be extraordinary, far beyond anything humanity can produce, making the kugelblitz more of a theoretical possibility than a practical object. Take a slow breath, imagine light being compressed tighter and tighter until spacetime itself folds around it, and let Physics With William carry you into calm — where even pure radiation can become a black hole.
