How Houston Conquered the Impossible, The Rise of America’s Energy Capital

Houston, Texas, may be one of the most unlikely major cities in American history. Founded in 1836 along Buffalo Bayou, Houston began as a modest settlement with a difficult waterway and a powerful rival in nearby Galveston. Yet through determination, massive infrastructure projects, railroads, the Houston Ship Channel, and the Texas oil boom, the city transformed itself into one of the most important economic centers in the United States. The completion of the Houston Ship Channel in 1914 changed everything, giving Houston direct access to deepwater commerce. The discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901 helped ignite an industrial revolution across Texas, while Houston became a major center for refining, petrochemicals, shipping, and energy. By the 1970s, Houston had emerged as an international energy capital. But Houston's story did not stop with oil.
