Champagne taste, convenience-store-cola money. He arrives at the restaurant in an impressive car and accepts the valet's compliment with a straight face—until she spots the rental tag. He turns it over, tells her to order anything, then checks the prices twice. She has understood the performance all along. The expensive fries barely get touched. After splitting the bill, she takes him to a food truck by the pier. Two burgers and paper napkins are enough for his shoulders to drop. She takes a bite before he even sits down, then steals the last fry. The next date needs neither a better car nor a bigger bill: just him. The production brings West Coast hip-hop together with blues guitar, elastic G-Funk synths and neo-soul harmony. Its relaxed 82 BPM design centers on short exchanges between guitar and bass. A three-note electric-guitar motif uses bent notes for a sly, teasing edge, while warm Rhodes ninth chords soften the harmony. Sliding 808 notes, a punchy vintage-style kick, dry snare and sparse hi-hats balance low-end weight with breathing room. The arrangement creates movement by taking elements away. Bass dropouts give the returning chorus more weight; a loose boom-bap turnaround changes the scene without breaking the pocket. A Rhodes-and-guitar bridge strips back the surface gloss, matching the moment the evening becomes more honest. Blues inflection and the easy elasticity of G-Funk hold the story together. From SWAY.
