What would happen if you tried to live where the air contains roughly half the oxygen available at sea level?
Deep in the Peruvian Andes sits La Rinconada — one of the most extreme permanent human settlements on Earth, perched around 5,000 metres above sea level.
Here, the air is thin. The cold is relentless. Gold mining dominates the landscape. And beneath the streets, an enormous mountain disappears into darkness.
In this cinematic documentary, we travel into one of the highest inhabited places on Earth to discover what everyday life looks like when simply breathing becomes harder.
We explore:
• What happens to the human body at extreme altitude
• Why La Rinconada exists at more than 5,000 metres
• The gold that brought thousands of people into the mountains
• Life inside the freezing streets of the Andes
• The dangers of underground mining
• Oxygen deprivation and human adaptation
• Pollution and environmental problems associated with mining
• The strange sounds and stories surrounding the mountains
• And why people continue to call this extraordinary place home
But as daylight disappears, another side of La Rinconada emerges.
Stories of spirits.
Mountain legends.
Mysterious sounds from abandoned tunnels.
And the psychological terror of entering a place where the darkness itself seems to move.
Some stories are folklore.
Some have practical explanations.
And some mysteries are best left unexplained.
La Rinconada is not another fantasy world.
It is a real place, inhabited by real people, where human beings have adapted to one of the harshest environments on Earth.
So the final question is simple:
Would you live here if every breath reminded you how fragile human life really is?
Watch until the end.
Then tell us:
Would you live in La Rinconada?
