124 light-years from Earth orbits a planet whose atmosphere may contain a gas that, on Earth, is almost exclusively produced by living organisms. It sounds like we may have found life. But the real story is far more careful — and far more interesting — than that headline suggests.
This episode traces the full story of K2-18b, a sub-Neptune discovered by the Kepler mission in 2015, orbiting a cool red dwarf star well within its habitable zone. We explain why its size puts it in a completely unfamiliar category — larger than Earth, smaller than Neptune — and how Cambridge astronomer Nikku Madhusudhan's team proposed the "Hycean world" hypothesis: a hydrogen-rich atmosphere sitting above a vast liquid ocean.
We then walk through what the James Webb Space Telescope actually found — methane, carbon dioxide, surprisingly little ammonia, and a faint, uncertain signal matching dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a molecule tied to marine life on Earth. Crucially, we cover the real scientific process that followed: the original 2023 signal was statistically weak (~2 sigma), a 2025 follow-up using a different JWST instrument raised it to roughly 3 sigma — still well below the 5-sigma threshold science requires for a confirmed discovery — and multiple independent research teams have since reanalyzed the same data with conflicting results. Some find the DMS signal isn't statistically robust at all; others show several different molecules fit the same signal equally well.
We also cover an important complication: DMS has been detected on a comet and in interstellar space, places with no life at all, and photochemical models show it can form through non-biological chemistry too. And the planet's interior itself remains genuinely uncertain — a Hycean ocean, a magma ocean, or a plain gas-rich sub-Neptune with no surface at all are all still consistent with current data.
