On a large platter lay round, puffed-up bhaturas*. They had puffed up so much that they truly resembled small balloons. Nearby sat a bowl of piping hot *chhole (spicy chickpeas), the aroma of its spices wafting through the entire house. Dhanpal (65) (In amazement): Oh, daughter-in-law! Is this a bhatura or an actual balloon? Just look at how much it has puffed up! Arpit (27) (Jokingly): Babuji*, don't press it too hard... what if the air leaks out! Saumya (25) (happily): *Bhabhi*! You’ve worked wonders. I’ve never seen *bhatures this huge before. Kamla (60) (proudly): My daughter-in-law truly has magic in her hands. Devendra (30) (delighted): Madhavi... really! It was a treat today. NARRATION: Madhavi watches everyone eating. There was a distinct sense of contentment on her face. Madhavi (25) (smiling): Since you’re all praising it so much, let me also taste how the chole and bhature turned out... NARRATION: Madhavi suddenly sits up with a start, her hands flailing about. There was a light sheen of sweat on her forehead. Devendra, sleeping nearby, was looking at her in surprise. Devendra (30) (concerned): What happened? Were you looking for something in your dream? NARRATION: Madhavi remains silent for a moment and looks around. There was no *bhature*, no bowl of *chole*, and none of that aroma filling the house. Madhavi (25) (softly): Nothing... I just had a dream. Devendra (30) (asking): So, tell me—what did you see in the dream that left a smile on your lips yet made you wake up in a start? Madhavi (25) (smiling): I saw us all sitting together, eating piping hot *chole-bhature*, and just as I was about to take a bite, I woke up! Devendra (30) (teasingly): Oh really! What was my share? Madhavi (25) (laughing): You had the biggest bhatura of all. Devendra (30) (laughing): Wow! I’m being pampered even in your dreams. Madhavi (25) (emotionally): It’s been ages since we’ve had a decent meal at home... perhaps that’s why I was dreaming about food. NARRATION: Hearing Madhavi’s words, the smile vanished from Devendra’s face... he didn't know what to say, when his eyes fell upon the clock. Devendra (30) (softly): It’s morning, Madhavi. Madhavi (25) (startled): Oh! Is it morning already? Devendra (30) (getting up): Yes. I have to go to work, too. Madhavi (25) (with a faint smile): You get up and get ready. I’ll check the kitchen... maybe I’ll find something or other. NARRATION: Devendra got up to fetch his clothes, while Madhavi left the room and went into the kitchen. In the kitchen of this small rented house, the utensils were in their places, but there was nothing to cook. Madhavi stood by the stove and began opening the containers one by one, hoping that something might still be left. Madhavi (25) (dejectedly): What is this? ... Just this little bit of flour—it would be hard to make even two meals' worth of rotis from this. NARRATION: Disappointed, she closed that container and picked up another. Madhavi (25) (hopefully): Maybe the rice container has kept some faith... NARRATION: Her disappointment deepened when she looked at the second container. Madhavi (25) (despondently): Even the rice has run out. NARRATION: Then she moved towards the third container, which held small boxes of spices. Madhavi (25) (with a bitter laugh): There’s plenty here to add flavor... it’s just the actual morsel that’s missing! Narration: Just then, her eyes fell upon a small container placed at the very back... She reached out, picked it up, and opened it! Madhavi (25) (Helplessly): Look... just this handful of chickpeas. Should I use them to silence the hunger in our bellies or to save the family's dignity? What do I cook now? What do I serve everyone?
