Physicists have recently discovered experimental evidence of altermagnetism, a third variety of magnetism, using a layered crystal made of cobalt, tantalum, and selenium. Unlike traditional ferromagnetism, which aligns magnetic fields to split electron spins but creates problematic stray fields, or antiferromagnetism, which eliminates stray fields without effectively splitting spins, this novel material successfully combines the best traits of both. By weaving magnetic cobalt atoms between layers of tantalum and selenium, researchers created a customizable platform that can split electron states by their spin polarization without generating interference. This breakthrough allows scientists to manipulate data by transferring electron spin states rather than moving physical electrons, a promising concept known as spintronics. Ultimately, these easily modifiable layered altermagnets could revolutionize future technology by enabling the development of ultrafast memory devices, terahertz networks, and highly energy-efficient electronics.
