Will the Midterms Decide if America Slides Further Toward Fascism?

We are days away from what many consider a very consequential US midterm election in terms of whether the country continues to flirt with fascism. One such person is historian Timothy Snyder, author of many books including “On Freedom,” and “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.” “The role of the people is what's gonna be decisive,” said historian Timothy Snyder. “The opposition party has a chance to win a decisive victory in both chambers, and thereby begin systematic changes which could drastically improve the lives of Americans.” Host Maria Hinojosa speaks with Snyder about the significance of this historic moment, the best and worst case scenarios, and whether it is accurate to call what is happening fascism. “What we're doing definitely involves concentration camps. We deport people off the street violently,” said Snyder. “We have even greater concentration of wealth than we did 10 years ago, and we have a president who runs foreign policy essentially as a matter of who can bribe him the most.” The US midterm elections are on November 3rd, 2026.
